History of NANCSH (formerly NAFPN)
In 1974 when the NHS took over all the Family Planning clinics from the Family Planning Association, many nurses felt the need to have their own professional association to promote the aims of FP from the nurses' viewpoint and also to be provided with continued education and updating. The inaugural meeting of NAFPN was held in Birmingham on 4th October 1980.
The setting up of the Association could not have taken place without the enthusiasm and forward thinking of many people:-
Mr Pat Patterson (then of Wyeth), Sue Woods (the first Chairman), Marjorie Hickerton (the first Newsletter Editor), Ann Dewar (from the then DHSS), Muriel Holroyd (from SSFPN), Dame Josephine Barnes.... and many more people, too numerous to mention.
We are proud that the Northern Ireland Association of Family Planning Nurses are affiliated to us. We enjoy meeting with them and exchanging ideas. Our links with the RCN FP Forum remain strong and we continue to have a DOH Observer at our meetings.
In January 1996 NAFPN changed its name to the National Association of Nurses for Contraception and Sexual Health.
In 1999 NANCSH became a company limited by guarantee.
The registered charity is maintained.
