3rd Annual Brook Sexual Health Conference and Awards 2010

BoyGirlManWoman: Putting gender at the heart of improving sexual health and reducing teenage pregnancy

Thursday 4th March 2010
Arsenal Football Club, Emirates Stadium, London N5

The targets for reducing sexual violence, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections will not be reached unless gender becomes a primary consideration in formulating, developing and delivering policy and practice around young people's sexual health.

This annual conference is an important opportunity for professionals to come together to discuss the latest government strategies, policy developments and targets, and their impact. The conference will discuss the important role that gender plays in supporting young people in understanding themselves and making informed choices about their relationships, sexual health and contraception.

BSc (Hons)/Dip HE Sexual Health Studies degree course

A unique and exciting new degree has been developed by sexual health experts at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in a bid to move sexual health forward.

The BSc (Hons)/Dip HE Sexual Health Studies degree course is the first in the country to be offered at this level as a theory only, non-clinical route, and can be accessed by college leavers on a full or part-time basis.

Debbie Wisby, Course Leader from the Midwifery Department in UCLan's School of Public Health and Clinical Sciences, commented: “With the rise in incidents of STIs, especially among young adults, there has been an increase in the demand for sexual health services. The development of these services is now influencing the educational requirements of sexual health staff.

“This course has been created for people with an interest in sexual health and who don’t want to take the standard clinical approach. With sexual and reproductive ill-health increasing significantly in the UK, the Sexual Health Studies degree aims to help combat this increase, meeting the needs of the service and staff in the future in line with current sexual health issues, strategy and policy.”

The first ever National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV highlighted key governmental targets that address key areas of sexual health such as the transmission and prevalence of HIV and STIs and unintended pregnancy (especially in teenagers). An important element of achieving these targets is the education and training of healthcare professionals.

The first cohort of the new degree will start in September, covering topics such as understanding health, sexual health related biological sciences, sexuality, collaborative working in health and social care, research process, principles of contraception and fertility control, sexual health and sexually transmitted infections, sexual health promotion, leadership and organisational development, employability and enterprise amongst others.

For further information about the course, contact Debbie Wisby, Admissions Tutor/Course Leader in Sexual Health, on 01772 893887 or email: dawisby@uclan.ac.uk

Fertility Awareness

Fertility UK is currently developing an accredited training course in collaboration with Margaret Pyke.  It is being developed for health care professionals to enable basic and advance skilled consultations in fertility awareness. This is proposed to be a course containing 5 theory days  spread over a 3 month period in total and will give those attending a comprehensive training in this subject. Within the programme there will be development of clinical skills in this area.. At the end of the course, there will be an exam and an assessment of client teaching skills.

Fertility awareness methods are increasingly in demand from women and couples for several reasons – ecological and medical as well as cultural, religious and moral. In addition, from a service provider’s point of view, it is extremely cost effective. There is a growing demand for this training in order to meet the need.

If you would be interested in further details once they are available, it would be helpful in terms of assessing numbers and geographical location if you could email Rosemary Massouras, Chief Executive / Conference Manager at Margaret Pyke  rosemarymassouras@margaretpyke.org stating either your postcode or town/city. From this information, we will be able to inform you as soon as we have full details about the course.
